Most of my work these days is around writing blogs, shooting video, recording audio interviews, developing online communities, setting up web sites … and helping organisations and individuals do that for themselves.
However, in the past I’ve been a journalist, a workshop facilitator, and consultant in community engagement. I’ve helped set up regeneration partnerships and centres to support small business, and written guides to organisational development. I’ve outlined recent projects here, and you can see and download a CV here.
What I really enjoy is working with colleagues and clients on practical ways to use a mix of different communication methods, online and face-to-face, to help people collaborate better. For example I can:
- Just have a chat about any of these topics, and other matters you’ll find covered in posts on this blog. No charge for an hour or so. If it turns into a job, that’s great. If not, I’m sure I’ll learn something.
- Talk about the issues you face, and then plan a more structured session. This could be workshop with your colleagues, perhaps involving one of my collaborators. One or two days work might be enough … or could lead to something more substantial. Your choice. I like small pieces of work.
- Help you plan, over time, how to use social media within your organisation or for communication and collaboration with others. We would start with 2. and maybe more to a mix of strategy development, mentoring and hands-on support. If you need a website built – or different social technology tools assembled – we may do that, or suggest some other suppliers with whom you could contract directly.
- Organise, or help you organise, social reporting before, at and after an event. More on my blog about that, including a free guide.
- Plan how to use social reporting as a more active means of facilitation across a network to help people find their voice, and to bring to the surface stories, talking points, and opportunities for collaboration.
- Write an article, a book, a web site … even better, work with you and others to do that through a mix of face-to-face events, research, interviews and whatever else will help create a interesting mix.
- Join a team working on a project to add some communication and collaboration skills.
I’ll generally avoid consultancy that involves research, interviews and then presenting the client with an “expert” set of recommendations … because I’ve never found that works well in this field. As Ken Thompson says in this interview, you can’t learn to fly by watching the instructor … though a trip to get a birds-eye view of the landscape is a good idea.
Do drop me an e-mail, or give me a call. I live/work in the City of London, and also spend some time at One Alfred Place where the sofas are comfy, the wifi fast, and the food excellent.
