Next Big Thing in KM – workshop report

I’ve just finished running a workshop on What’s the Next Big Thing at the KIMPS09 public sector knowledge management conference, and succeeding (I think) through the simple expedient of asking participants what think. As I explained earlier I came up with the some conversation starters, then asked people in groups to imaged what advice they would give to a friend taking on a new KM job in a local authority, with an emphasis on social media.

You can see the conclusions people reached in the video report back above,  together with video interviews of speakers below. Roll mouse over lower part of video frame below for more speakers.

You can find all the videos from KIMPS09 on YouTube separately here. Main speaker names are in the video info. If slides become available, I’ll link.

David – I appreciate your thorough reporting. The first video is a rich resource for the game of jargon bingo. ;-)

Thanks Carl – I felt all participants made a great effort to make the idea of knowledge management more accessible … but it can quicker to be complicated than simple.

David, could you please include links to the videos on Youtube? I can’t get them to display as embedded content and had to go search. Thanks

It would also be interesting to know who the speakers are – whether they are starters on the KM journey speculating forward, or people who have succeeded with KM sharing success factors. I would imagine, given the limited history of KM in the public sector, they are the former?

Also, by asking “with an emphasis on social media” – are you in some danger of pre-judging the outcome? As you know, the answer you get depends on the question you ask!

PS just in case my comments sounded picky, they weren’t meant to be! This is an excellent piece of reportage, thank you very much, and it has raised several questions in my mind, that’s all!

    Thanks again

Thanks Nick – I’ve now added the link to the YouTube playlist. Main speakers are identified in the video info. I didn’t do that for the report backs, because people were speaking for the group.
On the “pre-judging the outcome” – fair point, but to explain more fully there’s two sorts of content here.
First, interviews with main speakers following their presentations where there was no prompt to focus on social media.
Second, report-back content from the workshop that I ran, where there was a deliberate bias from the scenario I explained here.
The rationale for that was I thought “the next big thing” was conversations and story-telling aided by social media.
I’ll do a better post when I have a moment … this one was end of the workshop. Anyway, glad it is raising some issues, and really appreciate your interest.
